Day 1 - The First Day in Cape Town

The 2025 delegation arrived safely in Cape Town late last night and were graciously welcomed by a few very dear friends. The hugs and smiles made the fatigue of the long journey disappear.

We had a busy and beautiful first day that started off at the Botanical Gardens with a lovely view of Table Mountain. We celebrated Eucharist outside next to a small stream and large purple blossoms (and only got sprayed by the sprinkler a few times); this allowed us time to reflect, pray, and prepare our hearts and minds to be opened up to the experience and emotions that will unfold over the next 2 weeks.

We enjoyed lunch at JL Zwane Memorial Church, in the black township of Guguetu, the place where much of AIAIA’s work was initiated 25 years ago. We listened to and spoke with numerous church members who are leading a variety of incredible community projects ranging from mental health support for young girls to teaching those with disabilities employment skills.

In the afternoon, we visited for the first time, Vukuhambe, one of the community projects shared at lunch which assists people living with physical disabilities who have limited employment opportunities and trains them in sewing, bead work, gardening, and recycling old hangers. As we walked around the building, busy smiling faces welcomed us and proudly displayed their beaded jewelry and recycling project.

We returned to a long term care facility that has become an annual event and saw many familiar faces. It felt wonderful to be able to share in conversation while providing a little pampering hand massage, as well as to see their joyful faces when presented with a new hat or colorful scarf.

We ended our day exploring a lovely garden planted behind a local elementary school. Determined women in the community cultivated the the unused land into  a space filled with broccoli, peppers, kale and herbs. As these women and their families work the land, they have high hopes not only for themselves but strive to mentor others and build greater self sufficiency for the community.

The delegation appreciates your ongoing thoughts and prayers as we begin this journey. Your commitment and support makes all the difference!
