INSTITUTE FOR HEALING MEMORIES

Its work has grown out of South Africa’s unique history and the need to remain attentive to how a divided past can impact people both individually and as communities and as a nation.

Alan Michael Lapsley, SSM, known as Father Michael Lapsley, is a South African Anglican priest and social justice activist.

Arm in Arm has long supported the unique work of Fr. Michael Lapsley, a renown Anglican priest who lost an eye and both hands in a letter bomb explosion intended to dissuade his social justice work. The Institute for Healing of Memories (IHOM) seeks to contribute to lasting individual and collective healing that makes possible a more peaceful and just future. IHOM conducts 3 major programs to aid healing in areas of destruction:

  • Healing of Memories workshops: Explores and acknowledges the emotional wounds carried by nations, communities and individuals, enabling people from diverse backgrounds to confront sources of alienation and conflict.

  • Restoring Humanity Youth Project: Equips young people with the capacity and skills to address actions and attitudes that harm or destroy human dignity in their community, and to re-draw damaging patterns of behavior.

  • Community healing project: Provides a platform where residents can exchange ideas, initiatives and plans in order to build solidarity across race, class, ideology, gender, generation other potential conflict lines.
